fearlessw's 50 Favorite Albums of 2007 [Dec. 22nd, 2007|11:46 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
1. Caribou / Andorra (Elliot Smith + The Zombies + Kid A. One of those albums that reflects the state of my mind and feels absolutely of its time. Listening to it the first time, I could feel all the teeth of the gears fall silently and perfectly into place. “Melody Day”)

2. Jens Lekman / Night Falls Over Kortedala (He’s a little Sinatra, a little Morrissey, a little ABBA. Singer / songwriters always have a special place with me, especially the Romantics. He’s the best today. “Friday Night a the Drive-In Disco”)

3. M.I.A. / Kala (Most people seem to take this a feel-good party type of album, but what I love is how she turns on pop colonialism, appropriating The Modern Lovers and Pixies like they were flavors of the month. “Paper Planes”)

4. Okkervil River / The Stage Names (Like most of my favorite albums, this exudes a love for music. The history of pop is always under the surface, sometimes bubbling up (“Plus Ones”) and sometimes taking over (“John Allyn Smith Sails”). “Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe”)

5. LCD Soundsystem / Sound of Silver (It’s received a lot of love, and maybe more hate. I suppose it is very stupid, but I can’t help it. I’ve heard every track picked as a favorite by someone – the hallmark of a classic. “North American Scum”)

6. The National / Boxer (Like The Stage Names, this is a sequel album, a darker, meeker sibling that seems to leave the best parts unstated, and is all the more beautiful for it. “Ada”)

7. St. Vincent / Marry Me (Another singer who says things both simply and strangely. Though its had a fair amount of media attention, its been nearly universally and unfairly ignored on year-end lists. “Paris is Burning”)

8. Jay-Z / American Gangster (I’ve always enjoyed Jay-Z as a singles artist. This, I think, is his first great album. Too much has been made of the concept, but not enough of his brilliance as a storyteller. “Hello Brooklyn 2.0”)

9. Feist / The Reminder (“1234”)
10. Beirut / The Flying Club Cup (“Cliquot”)
11. Menomena / Friend and Foe (“Evil Bee”)
12. Kanye West / Graduation (“Stronger”)
13. PJ Harvey / White Chalk (“When Under Ether”)
14. Radiohead / In Rainbows (“Nude”)
15. The Avett Brothers / Emotionalism (“Die Die Die” – my favorite song of the year)
16. Yeah Yeah Yeahs / Is Is [EP] (“Down Boy”)
17. John Vanderslice / Emerald City (“White Dove”)
18. Pharoahe Monch / Desire (“Body Baby”)
19. Bishop Allen / The Broken String (“Rain”)
20. El-P / I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead (“Up All Night”)

21. Fiery Furnaces / Widow City
22. Daft Punk / Alive 2007
23. Wilco / Sky Blue Sky
24. Black Francis / Bluefinger
25. Animal Collective / Strawberry Jam
26. Dan Deacon / Spiderman of the Rings
27. Arcade Fire / Neon Bible
28. Saturday Looks Good to Me / Fill Up the Room
29. Bonnie “Prince” Billy / Ask Forgiveness [EP]
30. Battles / Mirrored
31. Josh Ritter / Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter
32. Of Montreal / Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
33. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings / 100 Days, 100 Nights
34. Rufus Wainwright / Release the Stars
35. Rilo Kiley / Under the Blacklight
36. Andrew Bird / Armchair Apocrypha
37. Los Campesinos! / Sticking Fingers Into Sockets [EP]
38. Ghostface Killah / The Big Doe Rehab
39. Panda Bear / Person Pitch
40. Liars
41. Aesop Rock / None Shall Pass
42. The White Stripes / Icky Thump
43. The Bees / Octopus
44. Elliott Smith / New Moon
45. Klaxons / Myths of the Near Future
46. Black Lips / Good Bad Not Evil
47. Patrick Wolf / The Magic Position
48. Iron & Wine / The Shepherd’s Dog
49. Justice / †
50. Grizzly Bear / Friends [EP]

I post lists like this to try to justify an obsessive hobby that isn't really justifiable. Hopefully, you can still profit from it. I love the first eight, really like the next 25 or so, and think the rest are worth checking out and better than average. I'll post my top songs, too.

Glad you like The National. Have you heard 2004's Alligator yet? I like one even more. I hope you like LCD, too. "North American Scum" through "All My Friends" is one of my favorite sequences of songs ever.

I don't know how hype works. I never listen to the radio or watch music TV. I mostly learn about new music from word-of-mouth on www.rateyourmusic.com, or from reviews / buzz on www.pitchforkmedia.com or www.stereogum.com. I also like to keep an eye of http://spinner.aol.com/; sometimes they make great albums available there.
